Until early 2003, I always thought these kinds of personal website were vanity projects for the self-absorbed. Which explains why my previous efforts have always been about someone or something else, though not, some would argue, why I had never done one before...
In recent conversation with my housemate Luke, I compared this kind of website to a scrapbook. It's a place to paste all the things that interest you and show off the things you do, whilst making notes like a diary. The only difference being, of course, anyone can look at it online...
