This drawing was done in relief. That is, I shaded the page in first, and then kept adding layers of darkness, kind of like a watercolour. The effect I wanted to get was to have a face seemingly loom out of the darkness but in the end it wasn't dark enough to begin with. The nose looks peculiarly flat here, but I'm particularly happy with the cheek bones and jawline.
