ONLINE HANGOUTS

Gamegossip
My main online hangout, this network of forums started out as a discussion ground for video games, but is only nominally still about that, having expanded to encompass everything and anything. I am mostly to be found in the Music, Serious and Creativity forums, or on the AvPNews boards which this site also incorporates.
NationStates
This is a god-game that you can't win. You control a country. Every day you are presented with a dilemma for which you have to choose a course of action. It's political, and every day all the nations in the world, your region and the UN (if you choose to join) are ranked along different criteria. It gets addictive when you join the UN, and start having an influence over other people too.
New Horizons
In 1999, a group at my high school decided to set up a MUD (multi user domain). Initially it was just going to be somewhere for us to meet up online. It's now somewhat expanded, having merged with another established MUD into a fully developed online fantasy roleplaying game. MUDs are the height of retro chic, trust me.

WRITERLY

ABC Tales
Immense free-for-all of a creative writing site. A little different from most places which host stories, this one has a dedicated team of editors who give each story a certificate. Most of mine ended up rated 18. They also give out cherry-pick awards, of which I have one. Most of the stories hosted there are also hosted here now. Watch out for the infamous Henstoat, one of several from my UEA course.
BBC Writer's Room
The BBC must be desperate if it's looking to the great unwashed to write for it. With writing advice aplenty, and soundbites from professionals, this is supposedly the most direct route into writing for television. Frequently teams up with BBC Talent.
Not An Exit
A weblog not by but about one of my favourite writers: "American Psycho" and "Rules Of Attraction" author Bret Easton Ellis. The guy who runs this site is something of an e-stalker, keeping track of Ellis's movements as well as his career, and posting photos from the shy novelist's public appearances.
Wordplay
You can't teach writing, but you can learn it. The first thing this site said. And I've learnt more about writing from here than any other place. Compiled by the screenwriters of "Pirates Of The Caribbean", its emphasis is obviously on writing movies, but its teachings can be universally applied.

MOVIES

Ain't It Cool News
Immortalised and lampooned as Poop Chute in "Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back", this is the site that both made "The Blair Witch Project" famous and got famous itself off the back of it. Only really worth it for the news, avoid reading the comments left after each news posting. You'll never meet a group of people who expend so much energy on hating stuff.
"Alien Vs Predator"
The official site for the long-awaited clash of the science fiction titans over at Fox. Not the greatest movie site there is, but has the usual stock of wallpapers, downloads, trailers, plus documentaries made by the film's director himself, which was a nice touch.
Dark Horizons
The broadsheet movie rumours site compared to AICN's tabloid rag. This one filters out the bullshit and only posts news it can confirm. Australian-based rather than Texan, it's more international than AICN too. Also features regular interviews with people pissed off by AICN's frequent bad attitude.
Region 2 Project
My one stop shop for DVD news. Scouring the Internet for news and chasing rumours about new releases, it's updated pretty much daily. And what's better, it's Region 2 exclusive, though the odd bit of Region 1 news creeps in when relevant. Also keeps track of the BBFC's certification of DVD extras, so knows what special features will be on a DVD before they're announced.

MUSIC

Taborama
One of the best sites for guitar tabs on the Internet. There have only been a few tabs I haven't been able to locate here, and usually I've been unable to locate them anywhere else either. They have several version of each tab, which used to be confusing, but now they have a rating system so just go for the best rated for the more accurate one. My "Red Dwarf" theme tune tab is hosted here.

SHOPPING

Amazon
Self-explanatory. With CD prices becoming extortionate, Amazon are not so much being the face of competitive marketing so much as they're wiping the floor with everyone else. A CD or DVD on Amazon can often be half the price that it is in the shops. Coupled with a great, reliable service. Plus you can sell old, unwanted stuff through them too.
Jacob's Photo
For all your online photographic needs. I ordered a power cable for my digital camera from this lot one afternoon and it had arrived before I got up the next morning, and for less postage and packaging than I usually shell out for Amazon.
Play.com
Based in Jersey, this is one of Amazon's biggest competitors when it comes to DVDs, music, games, etc (doesn't do books). Prices are often unbeatable, postage is free (takes a few days), and when I pre-ordered the "Dawn Of The Dead" remake on DVD through them, it arrived two days before it was in the shops.
Sounds Great Music
I got my RP200 digital effects processor from these people. Prompt, efficient, good value service. The only problem I have with them is that they don't always put prices up on their site. Their selection is also pretty limited, but if they have what you want, definitely go with them.
Spectresound
I ordered an Epiphone Les Paul Standard from this lot, only to call back a week later and for them to tell me they couldn't get me one. So instead they knocked £40 off the asking price for the next model up and offered to ship it the next day. Now that's what I call good service.

MISCELLANEOUS

"Alien" Encyclopedia
When everyone else was revising, I spent my GCSE period whipping up my first attempt at a website: an encyclopedia of the four "Alien" movies. Pretty exhaustive, to the point of fanboy obsession, I still managed to get pretty good GCSEs, even though I never properly finished the site. A few years back I let Scott Middlebrook take over the encyclopedia and develop what I'd started.
Friends Reunited
The site that allows you to keep tabs on the people you went to school with. Or, more honestly, to keep tabs on who is doing better than you. Only slightly more than half the people I went to school with are registered at the site. I have little desire to be reunited with most of them, and even less I would call friends, but it's an unavoidable nostalgia fix.
Political Compass
An interesting site that posits that Left and Right are simplistic indicators of where you are on the political spectrum, and thus introduces the four-quadrant model. Take the test and see where you fall. I got the Libertarian Left (Economic: -4.88, Social: -5.74). Actually, I only know one person who didn't fall in the same quadrant. My ex-housemate Luke got Authoritarian Left. Hohum.
Wikipedia
Imagine an online version of "Encarta", constantly being updated, fully-integrated into the Internet with links to thousands of sites relevant to entries. That's the Wikipedia, though it's more than just a glorified search engine. Though it's written entirely by members of the public, its team of editors ensure it's not just a testament to shared ignorance. One click leads to another, then you're addicted.
